The Miles Per Gallon Illusion: Who saves more money?


This is an original performance task type activity. The MPG Illusion comes from a 2008 article in Science Magazine. 

In the activity, students compute who would save more money by upgrading to a new fuel efficient vehicle assuming all drive the same amount of miles per year. The results will surprise you.

Your download includes two versions. Pages 1-2 are appropriate for most classes, but pages 3-4 are for honors/advanced classes.

Skills addressed include ratios, percentage change, graphing and rational functions.
